Going camping in your RV is a great way to spend time with family and friends, make new memories, explore the world around you and see new things. However, it’s important when you go camping that you take every precaution possible. Being out in the wilderness means you’re more vulnerable to accidents, illnesses and injuries, and you’ll want to make sure that you and your traveling companions are doing everything you can to stay safe and have a stress-free vacation.

As your South Carolina RV dealer, John’s RV Sales & Services has the tips you need to keep yourself safe in the great outdoors with your RV.

1. Know Where You’re Going

First, it’s a good idea to research your destination so you know what to expect in terms of climate, terrain, wildlife and amenities. The things you need to pack for a trip to the mountains are very different from what you need to pack if you’re heading to the coast.

2. Check the Forecast

Knowing what to expect in terms of weather will help you to plan and pack better. Check the forecast in advance of your departure date and again on the day you leave to make sure that your route doesn’t have any storms brewing. If the weather seems dicey, you may want to delay your journey. Locate some places you could pull over if the wind picks up, too.

3. Pack Medical Supplies

Make sure that you’re ready to address illnesses and injuries on your trip. Bring everyone’s prescription medications and medical devices. A well-stocked first-aid kit should be on board every RV and you should replenish it before every trip. Some helpful items to include in your first-aid kit are:

  • Bandages.
  • Waterproof medical tape.
  • Tweezers.
  • Nail clippers.
  • Antibiotic cream.
  • Aloe vera.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Calamine lotion.
  • Bug spray.
  • Antacids.
  • Painkillers.
  • Gauze.
  • Antiseptic wipes.
  • Cotton swabs/balls.
  • Saline solution.

4. Respect Nature

Finally, you need to make sure that you’re being respectful of the environment and of the animals that live in that environment whether you’re out in the woods, by the beach or in the mountains. Here are a few tips:

  • Stay away from animals and give them lots of space when you’re out hiking.
  • Seal up your food supplies to keep them safe from bears and other predators.
  • Don’t feed wild animals or try to touch them, and be especially wary around mothers and their young.
  • When following a nature trail, don’t stray from the path that’s been created.
  • Avoid hiking or adventuring at night, especially near water.
